Set in one of the Mediterranean's most stunning reserves, the Golden Sands area in the North West part of the Maltese Island, Hellfire belies the serenity this place envokes.
This year, the Hellfire Triathlon will host the National Cross Championship event in partnership with the Malta Triathlon Federation. However we are open to all levels, as usual.
With record 35 Degree Censius heat in the shade in Sept this triathlon is not only extreme because of the rough and demanding terrain, but the heat exhaustion factor multiplying its difficulty.
With a scientific approach to hydration, and a well planned preparation, this event will prove to be one of the most rewarding challenges you will finish.
Aiming at both the elite and beginner athletes, the event will be geared towards every level of fitness. In this way, everyone can take up the challenge. The team relays are always really exciting to watch!
The blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea cool off the athletes in the mid-afternoon heat, as they sprint into the sea at the beach start. The swim, marked by buoys, includes a loop route around the bay. Exit the water after one loop for the half distance. Athletes will exit the water at the entry point and run up the 20% incline to T1 to prepare for the bike leg. Full distance get back in for the second loop!
After T1, the offroad mountain bike section starts along the cliff edge with spectacular views of the open sea. With 2 loops (1 loop for half) on some extreme terrain, bikes must be carried for short stretches. The terrain can however, be very fast and include some hair-raising action. T2 hydration will provide a welcome relief to the dust caked faces coming off the bikes. The GARMIN ROUTE HERE http://connect.garmin.com/course/1823472
After T2, the trail run covers the renowned clay cliffs of Gnejna Bay, leading towards the small village of Mgarr. The loop includes some narrow pathways that need to be managed in single file, as well as some open rocky terrain with little semblance of a trail to follow. The two loop race ends at the Golden Sands Resort near the transition area. The GARMIN RUN ROUTE IS HERE http://connect.garmin.com/course/7849864
